ISRO & Protoplanet Launch HOPE Station in Ladakh to Simulate Mars Missions

🧭 India’s First Dedicated Planetary-Analogue Habitat

On July 31, 2025, ISRO inaugurated the Himalayan Outpost for Planetary Exploration (HOPE) in Ladakh’s Tso Kar Valley (India Blooms). 

Developed in partnership with Bengaluru-based Protoplanet, and supported by institutions such as IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IIST Trivandrum, Birbal Sahni Institute, and the University of Ladakh, HOPE is a key milestone in India’s journey toward Mars and lunar missions (Protoplanet).

🏔️ Why Tso Kar? A Martian Twin on Earth

Ladakh’s cold, arid, high-altitude terrain closely resembles conditions on Mars and the Moon — with −20 °C winters, thin oxygen (~40% of sea‑level), and saline permafrost landscapes. 

This makes Tso Kar an ideal site to test habitats, mobility systems, and human adaptation scenarios for interplanetary missions (Wikipedia).

🚀 The Mission & Habitat Design

HOPE consists of two interconnected modules:

An 8-meter-wide living space for astronauts

A 5-meter utility unit for machinery and life-support setups like hydroponics, sanitation, medical monitoring, and power systems (India Blooms)

From August 1 to 10, two crewmembers remain inside for a 10-day trial mission. This simulates isolation, resource management, extravehicular activity, and planetary surface operations (India Blooms).

Testing life-support systems, communication technologies, and modular habitat designs
